Doug Gammell
Title: AHC/Hitting/Catching Coach

Coach Gammell started his coaching career in his home state of Massachusetts. He was an assistant coach for Turners Falls High School in 1995 & 1996. Following a move to Idaho he resumed his coaching career. He was an assistant coach at Pocatello High School in 1997 & 1998. He then moved across town to Century High School where he served as the hitting coach and catchers’ coach from 1999 through 2004. During this time, the team made the playoffs every year and amassed a 100-32 record. He also was the head coach of the Pocatello American Legion team from the years 2000-2004 leading his team to the State playoffs every year. Along the way, Gammell coached three players who played professional baseball. He also had a string of five straight catchers who either played Division I baseball or pro baseball.

In 2005, Gammell moved to Sumter, SC, where again he coached high school baseball, this time at Lakewood High School where he served as the hitting and catching coach. In his four years at Lakewood, the school won its first two district championships and reached the playoffs each of the four years. He was an assistant coach for Dalzell legion team the first time they ever made the state playoffs, and for two years he was an assistant for the Bishopville legion team. This is his ninth year at Florence-Darlington Tech where once again he will serve as the hitting coach and work with the catchers. Coach Gammell has had numerous hitters including 10 catchers reach either Division I or pro baseball over his career.

Under Coach Gammell’s guidance, Tech hitters have set every team offensive record & all but 2 individual records along with 8- 1st team All-Region players, 1 region player of the year, & 1 All-American. His catchers have won 2 Region Gold Gloves since 2013, the first year the award was given. Gammell has only had 1 losing season in his entire career. He was named Associate Head Coach in 2014 & became an Associate Scout for the Atlanta Braves in 2015.

Gammell is a graduate of Idaho State University where he played Rugby after his baseball career and was inducted into the ISU Rugby Hall of Fame in 2002. He has a Master’s Degree in American History and Government from Ashland University in Ohio.  His thesis title was; Baseball and World War II: When baseball stepped up to help in the war effort.  He is a Social Studies teacher at Marion High School and has been married to Brandi (Cook) since July 4, 2016.
