FDTC Baseball Completes Sweep in USC Sumter Weekend Matchup

FLORENCE, S.C. (April 5, 2021) – The No. 19 Florence-Darlington Technical College Stingers swept USC Sumter at home 6-4 and 9-3 on Saturday after dominating Friday’s doubleheader.

In the 6-4 victory over USC Sumter, the Tech Stingers didn’t solidify the win until the final inning of the game. USC Sumter struck first by posting a run in the second inning and two runs in the third inning. The Tech Stingers took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third. USC Sumter tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Tech Stingers answered back with two additional runs. Catcher, Gary Lora who singled on a 1-1 count batted the final run in. USC Sumter was held scoreless in the seventh inning.

Jacob Greer won the game on the mound. He allowed no hits or runs in one-third of an inning. The win marks his second of the season. Josh Patterson earned his fourth save of the year as he pitched the final inning, striking out two batters. Collin Welch pitched 3.2 innings as he struck out four batters and allowed a run. Hunter Parks also saw time on the mound as he pitched the first two innings.

Lora went 2-for-3 at the plate with a homerun in the third inning. He had a run and two RBI throughout the game. Scott McDonough also went 2-for-3 as he earned 2 RBI. JT Marr was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, a run, a RBI and a walk. Patrick Matthews had a hit and a run.

During the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, the Tech Stingers took the lead in the second inning and never looked back as they won 9-3.

Charlie Mac Toman earned his fourth season victory on the mound. He pitched five inning, striking out three batter and allowing two walks and three runs. Jorge Oleaga pitched the final two innings in relief. He struck out two batters.

Lora once again led the Tech Stingers at the plate. He went 2-for-4 with another home run, and 3 RBI. Chandler Woolridge has a double, a run and a RBI. Patrick Baggett, DJ Sullivan, Patrick Matthews and Trey Yates had a hit each.

The Tech Stingers improve to 26-3 overall and 9-1 in Region 10.

The Tech Stingers will play the Francis Marion University JV team at Sparrow Stadium at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6. The team will then travel to the state’s capital to play Columbia International at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7. Over the weekend, the Tech Stingers will travel to Lancaster, South Carolina to play region rival, USC-Lancaster. Doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday will begin at 1 p.m.
